Welcome to My Journey and Collection

As I prepare to move to Detroit to be closer to family, I find myself at a bittersweet crossroads. My new home, a charming 1939 brick bungalow, simply cannot accommodate my extensive collection of vintage memorabilia. After much reflection, I realize it’s time to say goodbye to many cherished items. While I won’t retire from teaching and writing, I will part with most of my beloved collection.

Forty-two years ago, as I worked on my first book, I never imagined that it would lead to a fulfilling career as a fiber artist, author, and teacher. What began as a humble project blossomed into a journey that has taken me across the world—twenty-four annual teaching visits to Australia, seventeen trips to Japan, and countless visits to New Zealand and Europe. Every trip, I returned home with suitcases full of vintage treasures, each one holding a unique story. My students and friends, who come from all walks of life, have shared in the joy of these discoveries, offering new perspectives, materials, and ideas.

The most rewarding part of my work has been the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had. From learning to bake a perfect Pavlova in Australia to practicing politeness in Japanese, German, Italian, and French, my travels have been filled with fascinating moments. I’ve participated in Buddhist ceremonies in Japan, marveled at the haunting sound of bagpipes in Scotland, and witnessed the powerful dance of Australian Aborigines. My journey has taken me to some of the world’s most awe-inspiring places, from the Three Sisters in Australia to the Great Barrier Reef. Yet, perhaps the most enchanting part of my journey has been the hunt for vintage treasures. Whether at second-hand shops, musty bookstores, or hidden alley markets, I’ve always been on the lookout for something special to bring home.

With fifty years in this career, I’ve accumulated a vast collection of needlework tools, supplies, and memorabilia—each piece with its own memory and significance. My love for antiques started at twelve when I purchased my first five antique cigarette silks, a moment that sparked a lifelong passion. As an author, photographer, and illustrator, I’ve used these treasures as props, backdrops, and sources of inspiration.

With the invaluable help of my daughter Maddy and son-in-law Tony, we’ve created this online vintage store to share my collection with you. Every item here holds a piece of my heart, and I hope you find something truly special to add to your own collection.

All the very best,
Judith
