Vintage Chinese Sewing Basket

These charming lidded baskets were once a popular item in 1800s China, often filled with sewing notions and given as bridal gifts. By around 1880, they began being imported to the United States in large numbers, each with its own unique character—some richly adorned, others more minimalist, and some beautifully plain. They came in various sizes, typically between five and fourteen inches in diameter, and were crafted from natural materials like cane, grasses, rushes, willow, honeysuckle, and bamboo. Primarily produced near Canton in Guangdong province, these baskets remained popular in the U.S. until about 1930.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of collecting these exquisite baskets in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Each one has been lovingly restored and is filled with a selection of treasures—a pin cushion, vintage scissors, pin holders, mother-of-pearl buttons, silk threads, a beautiful piece of lace, and sewing needles. The baskets are lined with gorgeous Obi fabric, adding an extra touch of elegance. I hope these little works of art bring as much joy to you as they have to me over the years!
