The Vintage Chinese Sewing Basket Archive

Originating in 19th-century China, these hand-woven lidded baskets were traditionally gifted to brides, filled with sewing notions to begin their new homes. Crafted from natural materials such as cane, bamboo, and willow, these baskets were primarily produced in the Guangdong province and became highly sought-after imports in the West between 1880 and 1930. Each basket possesses a unique character, ranging from richly adorned ceremonial styles to elegant, minimalist designs.

Judith has spent decades sourcing these exquisite pieces across the globe, from Australia to Canada. Every basket in this collection has been meticulously restored and elevated with a custom lining of vintage Japanese Obi fabric. To honor their original purpose, each one is curated with a selection of premium sewing treasures—including mother-of-pearl buttons, silk threads, and vintage scissors. These restored sets are more than just storage; they are functional works of art that preserve a nearly lost tradition of needlework history.
